He Knows Us By Name

Names. It’s so hard to keep them straight. I have four children and I constantly messed up their names, especially when I wanted them to do something. My youngest two are named Joe and Scott. I can’t tell you how many times I would call out for ScJoe or J’Scott. I remember one time when I made that mistake, Scott told me, “I’m not ScJoe; I’m J’Scott.”

I would reply with, “You know who I’m talking to.” And, they did; but they never liked to miss an opportunity to tease me.

It’s even more humbling to tell you how challenging it is to remember the names of new people. I recently met someone new at church. She is a lovely woman named Jessica, I think. This sweet woman is very gracious as I have called her both Jackie and Jennifer. To help me out, I even wrote her name down, but I can’t pull out my phone every time I see her. I want to be better at this.

It’s funny how God uses these things to remind me of simple truths. I was frustrated with my memory when He reminded me that He knows my name. It is engraved on the palm of his hand. He never mixes it up with one of my sisters.

Our Heavenly Father knows us, cares for us, and calls us by name. Meditate on Isaiah 43:1-3a:

“But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
3 For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

Until we meet again,

Bonnie
